PTA REFLECTIONS Songwriting Seminar: Beg. Composition for Pianists

Always wanted to know how to write a song? We can teach you how!

Composing music is a skill that can be learned. It is a fun and engaging outlet for creative expression that even the beginning pianist can develop. We will explore the process of creating music, with and without lyrics. Young musicians are given the tools to create basic musical structures with emphasis on developing a beautiful melody. We will find harmonic, melodic and rhythmic ways to express ourselves through the piano. More advanced players will be given a more complex form.

All levels welcome for this 90 minute seminar. Students will leave with a MP3 file of their new song, to upload and share on their iPod! Class size limited.

Come join us Saturday, October 10th 10-11:30 AM - open to students of all ages!

The cost is a very reasonable $25 plus a $5 lab fee for materials (payable at the beginning of the session)

Debbie Murray runs a private piano studio in Moraga. She is an honor roll teacher for composition with the National Guild of Piano Teachers, and an accompanist for the Moraga School District. Ms. Murray performs with the Composers Group of the Contra Costa Performing Arts Society, as well as with the Jazz Piano group.

Debbie Murray performs and teaches both classical and jazz piano. Her specialties are in composition and applied music theory. Debbie promotes the Taubman piano techniques for enhanced performance and injury prevention. She believes that students should have fun and be creative while learning music, so all students write their own music in addition to their regular studies. Many of her students have won composition awards and most write their own arrangements.
